KFC's wolf markings chart by KFCemployee KFC's wolf markings chart by KFCemployee
holy poop this has taken like 4 hours to do between making a new shelter for the outdoor cats and playing with our indoor cat!
my friend Hazuki89 had a really good idea! a chart/page to reference from and show all the markings I follow for making my wolf designs :) This doesn't show ALL of them, because some of them I don't remember, but it shows about 90% of what I have in my head when making a design! "Mask? yes. Full! Black throat, white chest patch. Half saddle with a full dorsal cape and shoulder patch+black patch. full socks" etc etc
i dont actually  have them named but i had to assign a name to them to try and keep them organized! i have no idea what to call them so here they are, kinda confusing

so this is mainly helpful for anyone ordering a design commission or on the spot commission from me! here you can see all sorts of markings on their own. they can be combined and added on to each other to create hundreds of combinations :)
this isn't meant to be a reference for drawing realistic wolves or anything, it's just a representation of the patterns I've learned over the course of a few years of drawing canines (wolves). Some of the markings are from dogs (saddle, mask, black undersides) but they look good on wolves too! I love masks and socks so much :) I use the "half saddle" marking ALL the time. I layer the arm patch and shoulder over it.

So that's it!
Mostly intended for my clients to use as a visual guide in picking out what kind of markings they want. Sometimes it's hard to know without seeing examples, so here's a few of them!

These are very cute and I must say I love them! :D But the snout seems a tad bit too long for a canine.

I've been afraid to say this myself for fear of sounding like an ass, but I agree.

You're not being an ass for pointing out something, they're way of drawing canines make them look like they have a extremely long snout so it would even ruder to not point it out. <3 Constructive criticism is very helpful and helps artists in the future.

i usually like to not have criticism because, largely, i can see the mistakes too! for quick work like this i dont care about making them look correct (and for other stylized or quick work) and get a little disgruntled hearing something being pointed out that i already know is an issue (i'm already trying to get into the habit of fixing it/etc). But for things i dont already see, it can be very helpful! I had someone point out a mistake i was making with fur years ago and it impacted my technique monumentally!

I totally forgot I suggested this for you (and your commissioners) so I was quite confused when I saw that I was mentioned in something LOL --
but aside from that mild boost of confusion, this turned out wonderful! It's interesting to see all of the different markings, and I'm excited to see all of the different combinations that all of your viewers/commissioners will put together! :)

Would it be okay to use this as a template guide for our own markings and such?

I always have the worst time trying to find/think of natural marking for my wolves at times.

sure it'd be ok :) they're not mine, they're just patterns i've seen over time and memorized. they belong to the wolves hahaha!

No, thank *you*! I know the feeling. XD I myself often need references, but I try very hard to add my own flare when I use them so I'll feel like I'm learning even more.
